Gazing out from a sandy patch or perched precariously on a coral head, the goby is a familiar yet often overlooked resident of marine ecosystems worldwide. This incredibly diverse family of fish, Gobiidae, boasts an astounding array of forms, colours, and behaviours, making them one of the largest and most widespread families of vertebrates. While their diminutive size might lead some to dismiss them, these fascinating creatures play crucial roles in the health and balance of underwater environments, captivating those divers who take the time to observe them closely.
Identifying a goby can be a delightful challenge, given the sheer number of species, but several key characteristics often give them away. Typically small, most species rarely exceed a few centimetres in length, though some can reach up to ten centimetres. Their bodies are often elongated and somewhat cylindrical, tapering towards a relatively large head. A defining feature for many species is their fused pelvic fins, forming a disc-like suction cup that allows them to cling tenaciously to rocks, coral, or even the inside of a burrow, even in strong currents. Their dorsal fins are usually separated, with the first dorsal fin composed of flexible spines and the second of soft rays. Colouration varies wildly, from the vibrant blues and yellows of cleaner gobies to the cryptic mottled browns and greys of those camouflaged against sand and rubble. Many display intricate patterns of spots, stripes, or bands, often serving as species-specific identification markers or as a way to blend seamlessly into their chosen habitat.

Reproduction in the family is as varied as their appearance, but generally involves demersal eggs – eggs laid on the seabed or on a specific substrate – which are then diligently guarded by one or both parents until hatching.
