Triggerfish, a captivating family of marine dwellers, are instantly recognisable to divers for their distinctive, often vibrant, appearance and spirited personalities. Their common name, Balistidae, hints at their unique dorsal fin locking mechanism; the first spine can be locked erect by the second, allowing them to wedge themselves securely into crevices, making them virtually impossible for predators to dislodge. These fascinating fish exhibit a wide array of colours and patterns, from the striking geometric designs of the Picasso triggerfish to the iridescent blues and greens of the Queen triggerfish, and the more subdued, yet equally impressive, mosaic of the Titan. Generally oval-shaped and laterally compressed, they possess small, upturned mouths housing powerful, often prominent, teeth perfectly suited for their unique dietary needs. Their eyes are typically set high on the head, allowing for a broad field of vision, and their bodies are covered in tough, leathery skin, often giving them a somewhat rugged, resilient look.

Reproduction in the triggerfish family involves a fascinating blend of territoriality and parental care. Males often establish and defend a nesting site, typically a depression in sandy or rubbly areas close to the reef. They meticulously prepare these nests, sometimes fanning away debris with their fins, before attempting to attract females. Spawning sees the female deposit a clutch of demersal eggs within the nest, which are then fertilised by the male. Both parents, though often primarily the male, exhibit a strong protective instinct over their developing offspring, aggressively defending the nest from any perceived threat. This period of heightened territoriality is particularly noteworthy for divers, as species like the Titan triggerfish are known to exhibit exceptionally defensive behaviour, often charging at intruders who venture too close to their conical nesting sites. Juveniles, once hatched, typically drift as plankton for a period before settling into reef environments, gradually adopting the solitary and territorial habits of their adult counterparts.
