For those embarking on a Blue Rides liveaboard adventure, a fascinating and often amusing resident of the tropical and subtropical marine realm you’re almost guaranteed to encounter is the pufferfish (Tetraodontidae). Instantly recognisable by their distinctive boxy or globular bodies, these charming creatures come in a bewildering array of sizes, patterns, and colours, ranging from the diminutive and intricate to the impressively large and subtly camouflaged. Their most striking physical feature, and the origin of their common name, is their remarkable ability to inflate themselves into a spherical shape by rapidly ingesting water or air when threatened. This serves as a formidable defence mechanism, making them appear much larger and more difficult for predators to swallow. Look closely, and you'll observe their unique dentition: four fused teeth, forming a beak-like structure that is incredibly strong and perfectly adapted for their diet. Unlike many fish with separate, movable fins, their small, often translucent fins provide remarkable agility and precision in the water, allowing them to hover, turn on a dime, and navigate intricate reef structures with ease.

The reproduction of pufferfish involves various strategies, but typically features external fertilisation. Males and females engage in elaborate courtship displays, which can vary significantly between species. Following successful spawning, eggs are often laid on substrates such as rocks, coral, or even within sandy depressions, where they are sometimes guarded by the male until hatching.
