Amberjacks comprise several prominent predatory fish species within the genus Seriola belonging to the jack family Carangidae. Among them, the greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) is the largest member of the family, growing up to nearly two metres in length. These muscular, highly agile fishes feature an elongated, laterally compressed fusiform body covered with tiny cycloid scales, perfectly designed for high-speed pelagic swimming. Their body colouring varies from a brownish or bluish-grey tone along the back down to a clean, silvery-white underside, often complemented by a subtle yellowish or reddish-brown band running horizontally along the flanks.

Spawning seasons vary by species and geographic location but generally occur during warmer months, often peaking in spring and summer. Each female can produce a substantial number of pelagic eggs, sometimes reaching millions, which hatch into larvae within a few days. These larvae develop into juveniles, often associating with floating debris or sargassum mats for shelter.
