Among the most iconic residents of the tropical Western Atlantic, the green moray eel cuts an imposing figure on any dive. This magnificent creature, the Gymnothorax funebris, is a true giant of the reef, often reaching lengths of up to 2.5 meters (over 8 feet) and possessing a thick, muscular body that can weigh over 30 kg. Despite its common name, its skin is typically a dark, mottled grey or brown, sometimes with yellowish hues, with the greenish tint arising from a protective layer of yellow mucus that covers its entire body. This mucus serves as both a natural antiseptic and a shield against parasites, helping it to blend seamlessly into its rocky and coral-filled environment. Divers will most often spot just the head of this formidable eel protruding from a crevice or under a coral head, its large, often gaping mouth revealing rows of needle-sharp teeth. Unlike many other fish, their eyes are relatively small, relying more on their excellent sense of smell to locate prey. The constant opening and closing of their mouth is not a sign of aggression, but rather a necessary action to pump water over their gills for respiration.

While generally solitary, their presence is a clear indicator of a thriving reef ecosystem, as they depend on the abundance of shelter and prey that such environments provide. Encounters with multiple eels in close proximity are rare, as they prefer their own territories. Reproduction in these eels is thought to involve external fertilisation, where eggs and sperm are released into the water column. The resulting larvae drift with the ocean currents for an extended period, sometimes for months, before settling onto a suitable habitat and transforming into juvenile eels. This pelagic larval stage helps in their widespread distribution across their extensive range. Their role in the ecosystem is crucial; as apex predators in their micro-habitats, they help maintain the balance of reef populations, ensuring the health and resilience of the community by preying on the weak or unwary.
