About Argentine Islands - Vernadsky
Vernadsky Station (formerly the British base Faraday, now Ukrainian) sits on Galindez Island in the Argentine Islands archipelago — one of the most sheltered and consistently diveable locations on the Antarctic Peninsula. The labyrinth of small islands creates protected channels with minimal swell, allowing diving even when conditions elsewhere are impossible. The rocky substrate supports remarkably rich invertebrate communities for this latitude: colourful encrusting sponges in oranges and yellows, delicate lace-like bryozoans, forests of hydroids, and Antarctic sea anemones in surprising abundance. The calm, clear water (visibility often 20m+) and relatively mild conditions make this one of the most comfortable Antarctic dive sites — as close to 'easy' as Antarctic diving gets. After the dive, the station's Ukrainian crew famously offers visitors a shot of their homemade pepper vodka.
