Useful Island is a small, rocky outcrop in the Gerlache Strait that punches well above its weight in terms of underwater colour and diversity. The steep walls drop from the shoreline to 25m, and unlike the muted tones typical of many Antarctic sites, Useful Island's walls explode with colour — bright orange soft corals, crimson gorgonian fans, lemon-yellow sponges, and pink coralline algae create a palette that surprises divers expecting only grey and white.
