`Sabella pavonina`, commonly known as the peacock worm, is a marine polychaete annelid belonging to the family Sabellidae. Widely distributed along the coasts of Western Europe, Britain, Ireland, and the Mediterranean, this sedentary tube-dwelling worm is a striking sight on muddy sea floors, sand beds, rocky reefs, and shipwrecks. It is easily recognized by its exquisite, flower-like crown of tentacles that extends from an upright tube into the open water.

When submerged under water, the worm fully expands its decorative crown to feed and breathe. However, the crown is exquisitely sensitive to physical pressure, motion, and sudden changes in light. If a shadow passes overhead or water displacement signals potential danger, the worm instantly retracts its entire crown deep inside the protective mud tube.

Where the Peacock Worm lives

Its preferred habitats feature soft substrates composed of mud, sand, or gravel, where it can anchor its tube to buried stones or consolidate mud particles. It is also frequently discovered attached to hard surfaces on rocky reefs, loose stones, and wooden or metal structures on shipwrecks.

The worm's tube stands upright in the environment. All but the top few centimetres of its 30 to 40 centimetre long structure is embedded within the substrate or anchored to rock. To feed, the worm extends its fan of 8 to 45 feathery radioles into the water column. Microscopic cilia lining the radioles beat rhythmically to generate water currents through the crown. Organic and inorganic particles floating in the water become trapped in sticky mucus secreted by the tentacles.

The trapped material is then sorted by size. Cilia carry tiny, nutrient-rich food particles down specialized grooves along the radioles directly to the central mouth at the head.
