About Deception Island - Whaler's Bay
Deception Island is one of the most extraordinary dive sites on Earth — a flooded volcanic caldera entered through a narrow gap called Neptune's Bellows. Whaler's Bay, inside the caldera, offers geothermally heated water where you can feel temperature gradients shifting from near-freezing to surprisingly warm within metres. The volcanic black sand slopes beneath the surface harbour unique thermophilic organisms and colourful anemones that thrive in the mineral-rich water. Above, the rusted remains of a Norwegian whaling station from the early 1900s frame the landscape. Kelp forests sway in the gentle currents, and curious chinstrap penguins frequently torpedo past divers. The surreal combination of volcanic geology, industrial history, and Antarctic wildlife makes this unlike any other dive in the world.
