About Petermann Island
Petermann Island marks the southernmost point reached by most Antarctic Peninsula expeditions and hosts the continent's most southerly gentoo penguin colony. The surrounding waters are often choked with sculpted icebergs — tabular, pinnacled, and castle-shaped — that have drifted south from calving glaciers. Diving among these grounded icebergs reveals extraordinary underwater ice architecture: translucent blue walls, arched tunnels carved by wave action, and ice shelves extending horizontally like frozen wings. Antarctic cod shelter beneath the ice, and dense aggregations of krill attract feeding penguins and the occasional leopard seal. The extreme southern latitude means the diving season is very short (late December to early February), and conditions can shift from mirror-calm to gale-force in hours. For those who make it, Petermann offers Antarctic diving at its most raw and elemental.
