About Neko Harbour
Neko Harbour is one of few places where expedition vessels can land on the Antarctic continent itself (as opposed to offshore islands), and the diving here reflects that continental grandeur. The harbour bottom slopes steeply from shore, with ice formations both above and below the waterline creating a three-dimensional frozen labyrinth. Dense communities of cold-water invertebrates colonise every available surface — giant Antarctic sea cucumbers, basket stars with arms spanning half a metre, and vibrant orange and yellow soft corals. Weddell seals rest on ice floes overhead, their haunting calls resonating through the water. Glacial calving events occasionally send shockwaves through the harbour — expedition leaders monitor conditions carefully, but the distant rumble of falling ice adds to the otherworldly atmosphere of every dive.
