About Foyn Harbour
Foyn Harbour, adjacent to Enterprise Island, is a sheltered natural harbour containing multiple historic wrecks from the whaling era. The harbour floor is a maritime graveyard — rusted anchor chains, whale-oil processing equipment, and the skeletal remains of at least two smaller vessels lie scattered across the seabed, slowly being absorbed by Antarctic marine life. Dense kelp forests have colonised the wreckage, creating a haunting underwater forest interspersed with industrial archaeology. Antarctic terns dive-bomb the surface overhead, their shadows flickering across the kelp canopy below. The sheltered conditions and relatively shallow depth (3-15m) make Foyn Harbour one of the more accessible Antarctic dive sites, though the emotional weight of diving among the remnants of the whale slaughter adds a contemplative dimension that stays with divers long after surfacing.
