Sea spiders, formally classified within the marine arthropod class Pycnogonida and order Pantopoda (meaning "all legs"), are ancient ocean dwellers that have evolved for hundreds of millions of years. Despite their common name and eight-legged appearance, sea spiders are not true terrestrial spiders or arachnids, though they are chelicerate relatives. Found in oceans across the globe, over 1,300 to 1,500 distinct species of pycnogonids exist, ranging from microscopic forms hiding among shallow coastal weed to enormous specimens creeping across dark polar abyssal plains.
The most striking visual feature of a sea spider is its disproportionate "all legs" morphology. The body trunk is extremely reduced, consisting of a cephalon (head), thorax, and tiny abdomen. Extending from the central frame are long, multi-jointed walking legs—typically four pairs—that elevate the animal above sandy substrates and muddy silt without causing it to sink. At the front of the head sits a prominent, tube-like mouthpart called a proboscis, often accompanied by sensory palps and clawed appendages known as chelifores, though these appendages vary significantly across different families.
Because their central body trunk is so compact, sea spiders have evolved a unique internal architecture where vital biological systems extend into their legs. Pouches of their digestive tract run all the way to the extremities of their spindly limbs. Furthermore, these creatures lack specialized lungs or gills entirely; instead, oxygen diffuses directly through the porous surface area of their tube-like exoskeleton into their intestinal tissues, which then distribute oxygen throughout their bodies.

For underwater observers, sea spiders present a fascinating sight due to their unusual locomotion and parental behaviours. They move with slow, deliberate strides along benthic surfaces and are capable of stepping forward, backward, or laterally without rotating their trunks. Some species can also tread water or display brief pelagic swimming episodes above the seabed. Reproductive habits are equally peculiar: after females release eggs through genital pores in their legs, the male fertilises and collects them, carrying the egg clusters on dedicated appendages called ovigers until they hatch.
