About Enterprise Island - Wreck Gouvernøren
The wreck of the Gouvernøren is Antarctica's most accessible and atmospheric shipwreck. This Norwegian whale-oil factory ship caught fire and was beached on Enterprise Island in 1915 — her bow and forward masts still protrude above the waterline, rusted and draped in icicles. Below the surface, the stern section slopes into deeper water, its hull encrusted with a century of marine growth including massive mussels, giant limpets, and colourful anemones. Schools of Antarctic cod shelter in the wreck's interior spaces, and starfish the size of dinner plates cling to every surface. The combination of industrial archaeology, a century of natural colonisation, and the stark Antarctic backdrop creates an eerie, melancholic atmosphere unique in world diving. Penetration is not recommended due to structural deterioration, but the external tour is unforgettable.
