The Antarctic Icefish, or Champsocephalus gunnari, is a truly extraordinary inhabitant of the Southern Ocean, a marvel of adaptation in one of Earth's harshest marine environments. Its appearance is striking, featuring a slender, elongated body that can reach up to 60 centimetres in length, though most encountered by divers will be somewhat smaller. Their colouring is typically a pale, silvery-grey or greenish-grey dorsally, fading to a lighter, often pearly white on their bellies, providing excellent camouflage against the dimly lit depths. A distinguishing characteristic is their relatively large head and prominent, upward-pointing mouth, which hints at their feeding habits. They possess two dorsal fins, the first often being shorter and spiny, while the second is longer and soft-rayed. The pectoral fins are also notably large, often appearing fan-like, and are crucial for the precise manoeuvring observed in these fish. What truly sets them apart, however, is an internal feature: they are one of the few vertebrates that completely lack red blood cells and haemoglobin. Their blood is clear, a physiological anomaly that allows them to thrive in the frigid, oxygen-rich waters of their polar home.

Reproduction for this species is a significant event, typically occurring during the austral autumn and winter months. During this period, these usually somewhat solitary fish will gather in specific areas to spawn. Females lay large, demersal eggs, which means they sink to the seafloor and attach to the substrate, often in rocky crevices or among gravel beds for protection. The males are believed to guard these egg masses until hatching, a parental investment strategy that increases the survival rate of their offspring in a challenging environment. This behaviour, while not commonly witnessed by divers due to the depths and conditions, is vital to the species' continuation and highlights a complex life history.
