About Errera Channel
Errera Channel is a narrow waterway between Rongé Island and the Antarctic Peninsula mainland, and it is one of the most reliable locations for close encounters with humpback whales and leopard seals. The channel concentrates krill into dense clouds that attract these apex predators in extraordinary numbers. Diving here while humpbacks feed nearby is simultaneously thrilling and humbling — their immense 15-metre bodies moving with surprising delicacy just metres from tiny, dry-suited divers. Leopard seals are the other headline attraction: curious and intelligent, they will sometimes approach divers closely, their elongated snouts and powerful jaws creating an intense face-to-face experience. The rocky channel walls support healthy communities of cold-water corals and sponges. This is not a dive for the faint-hearted — the proximity to large marine predators in near-freezing water demands confidence, experience, and an unflappable temperament.
