The majestic Great Hammerhead, Sphyrna mokarran, stands as an icon of the ocean’s wild grandeur, instantly recognisable by its distinctive, broad cephalofoil. This magnificent creature, the largest of all hammerhead species, can stretch to an impressive 6.1 metres, though most encountered by divers are typically smaller, still commanding a breathtaking presence. Their overall colouration is usually a greyish-brown to olive on the dorsal side, fading to a lighter, often off-white belly, providing excellent camouflage against the vast blue. Unlike other hammerheads, the leading edge of their ‘hammer’ is almost straight, with only a very subtle indentation in the centre, a key identifier for discerning divers. Their tall, sickle-shaped dorsal fin is another prominent feature, making them unmistakable as they glide through the water. While their size can be imposing, their movements are generally graceful and deliberate, an elegant display of an apex predator in its element.

Reproduction in Great Hammerheads is viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young that have developed inside the mother, nourished by a yolk sac placenta. After a gestation period of around 11 months, females typically give birth to a litter of 6 to 42 pups in shallow coastal nurseries. These nurseries offer a relatively safe haven for the vulnerable young, protecting them from larger predators, including adult hammerheads, until they are robust enough to venture into more open waters. This reproductive strategy, while ensuring the immediate survival of the offspring, contributes to their critically endangered status due to the relatively low number of pups compared to other shark species, combined with the threats faced by the adults.
Ecologically, the Great Hammerhead plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of marine ecosystems. As apex predators, they help regulate the populations of their prey species, preventing overpopulation and ensuring genetic fitness within those communities. Their preference for bottom-dwelling prey like stingrays also influences the behaviour and distribution of these animals, indirectly affecting the benthic environment.
