Barrel sponges, belonging to the genus Xestospongia, are among the largest and most ecologically significant sessile invertebrates found on tropical coral reefs. Often referred to as the "redwood of the reef", these organisms are primarily represented by the giant barrel sponge Xestospongia muta in the Caribbean and Western Atlantic, and Xestospongia testudinaria across the Indo-Pacific. They form prominent barrel-, cone-, or volcano-shaped structures featuring a broad, concave central apex opening known as the osculum.

Barrel sponges (Xestospongia spp.) are sessile organisms, exhibiting no complex social behaviours or distinct activity patterns beyond their passive filter-feeding. As such, they do not engage in active hunting or elaborate social interactions typical of mobile marine life. Their reproduction typically involves broadcast spawning, a common strategy among many marine invertebrates. This process sees both male and female sponges releasing gametes directly into the water column, where external fertilisation occurs. While specific spawning seasons can vary regionally, warm ocean temperatures often trigger these events, leading to the development of ciliated larvae. These microscopic larvae are planktonic, drifting for a period before settling on a suitable substrate to undergo metamorphosis into a sessile juvenile sponge. The exact duration of the larval stage, precise clutch sizes, and the time taken to reach full reproductive maturity can be highly variable and are not always extensively documented for all Xestospongia species.
