Venturing beneath the waves to explore vibrant coral ecosystems, divers often seek out encounters with some of the ocean's most charismatic residents. Among them, the delightful anemonefish, commonly known as clownfish (subfamily Amphiprioninae), stands out as an iconic symbol of healthy reefs and fascinating marine symbiosis. These captivating fish are readily identifiable by their striking colouration, typically bright oranges, reds, yellows, and even black, often adorned with contrasting white bands edged in black. Their body shape is generally oval and compressed, with rounded fins that give them a somewhat clumsy yet endearing swimming style. While they come in a dazzling array of patterns and hues depending on the species – and there are many! – their universal trait is an unwavering association with specific host sea anemones. Reaching a maximum size of around 11 centimetres, these small but mighty creatures are a highlight for any diver.

Reproduction within these groups is equally fascinating. All anemonefish are protandrous hermaphrodites, meaning they are born male and can change sex to female if the dominant female in the group dies. When this occurs, the largest male transitions into a female, and the next largest male then takes on the role of the breeding male. This ensures the continuation of the colony within the safety of their anemone. Spawning usually occurs during a full moon, with eggs laid on a flat surface very close to the anemone's base. Both parents meticulously guard and fan the eggs until they hatch, a tiny but fierce parental devotion that is sometimes observable by patient divers. Their ecological role extends beyond their immediate symbiotic partnership; they are an integral part of the reef food web, contributing to nutrient cycling and serving as a food source for larger predators, despite their best efforts to remain protected.
