The open ocean holds a special allure for divers, a vast blue realm where some of the most awe-inspiring creatures reside. Among these, the Shortfin Mako shark, Isurus oxyrinchus, stands as a pinnacle predator, a sleek, powerful embodiment of speed and efficiency. These magnificent sharks are instantly recognisable by their streamlined, fusiform body, an anatomical masterpiece built for incredible velocity. Their dorsal surface typically ranges from iridescent blue to dark grey, fading to a stark white on their underside, a classic countershading that helps them blend seamlessly into the water column from above and below. Distinctive long, pointed pectoral fins are a key identifier, as are their large, dark eyes and the characteristic "M" shape of their caudal fin, or tail, which is proportionally quite tall. Perhaps their most striking feature, and often the first thing divers notice, are their formidable teeth – slender, sharply pointed, and visibly protruding even when their mouth is closed, perfectly adapted for grasping fast-moving prey. Adults can reach impressive lengths, occasionally exceeding four metres, though encounters with individuals closer to two or three metres are more common for divers.
