Bannerfish, belonging to the butterflyfish family Chaetodontidae and genus Heniochus, are amongst the most striking and recognisable teleost fishes encountered by scuba divers across the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific. Known for their laterally compressed, disc-like bodies and dramatic dorsal fin rays extended into elongated white filaments, these species are often referred to as pennant bannerfish, longfin bannerfish, or false Moorish idols.
Morphologically, species within Heniochus feature a distinct white background marked by prominent dark diagonal bands or stripes. For instance, the schooling bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes) and the pennant coralfish (Heniochus acuminatus) bear two broad black diagonal stripes, complemented by bright yellow soft-dorsal, caudal, and pectoral fins. The singular bannerfish (Heniochus singularius), the largest of the genus reaching up to 0.3 metres, displays a reticulated pattern between its dark bands along with a distinctive bony bump on the head, while the threeband bannerfish (Heniochus chrysostomus) exhibits three broad oblique brown bands and vibrant yellow-orange markings around its mouth and snout.

Bannerfish, comprising the genus Heniochus, typically exhibit diurnal activity, foraging for benthic invertebrates and algae on coral reefs during the day. Their social structure varies, with some species found singly, in pairs, or in small groups, while others, like the schooling bannerfish (H. diphreutes), form large aggregations that engage in plankton feeding. In terms of reproduction, these marine angelfish are oviparous broadcast spawners. Mating usually occurs at dusk, with pairs or groups ascending into the water column to release gametes simultaneously. Specific spawning seasons are not universally documented across all Heniochus species, though tropical fish often reproduce year-round or during warmer months. Fertilised eggs are pelagic, drifting as part of the plankton. There is no parental care. Clutch size is typically large, a common strategy for broadcast spawners, though exact figures are not consistently reported for all species.
