Honiara - Iron Bottom Sound Dive Site — Solomon Islands
About Honiara - Iron Bottom Sound
Iron Bottom Sound earned its haunting name from the hundreds of warships, transport vessels, aircraft, and submarines that sank during the brutal 1942-43 Guadalcanal Campaign. The seabed between Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and the Florida Islands is littered with WWII wreckage — from Japanese destroyers to American torpedo bombers. Most wrecks lie in deep water (40m+), but several are accessible to advanced recreational divers, their hulls now encrusted with coral and inhabited by large groupers and reef sharks. Diving here is as much a pilgrimage as an adventure — each wreck tells the story of a specific battle and crew. Local guides provide detailed historical context that transforms each dive into a living history lesson.
