On tropical coral reefs, Platax batfishes are among the most distinctive and approachable marine life encountered, recognised by their laterally compressed bodies that are frequently taller than they are long.
Adult reef batfishes typically exhibit a silvery-grey colouration marked by dark vertical bars passing through the eye and pectoral fin regions. Their dorsal and anal fins are tall and sail-like in younger individuals, though these become relatively smaller as the fish matures. In contrast, deep-sea and bottom-dwelling batfishes of Ogcocephalidae feature broad, flattened, box-like heads covered in rough lumps and spines, along with a heavily reduced dorsal fin and modified fins used for locomotion.

Batfish (Platax spp.) typically exhibit a diurnal activity pattern, foraging during the day and seeking shelter at night. Their social behaviour varies with age; juveniles are often solitary or found in small groups amongst mangroves or sheltered reefs, camouflaged amongst detritus or floating debris. Adults, however, frequently form larger aggregations, particularly in open water or around wrecks and deeper reef structures. Reproduction in Batfish is characterised by broadcast spawning, where eggs and sperm are released directly into the water column. This mode of reproduction is common among many reef fish, relying on external fertilisation. While specific mating seasons can vary regionally, spawning events are often linked to lunar cycles or specific environmental cues.
