The Creole wrasse (Bodianus parrae, synonym Clepticus parrae) is a moderately elongated labrid with a distinct elongate oval shape, slightly thicker than the typical cigar-like profile seen in many other wrasse species. Reaching a maximum length of 0.3 metres (30 cm), males are larger while females remain smaller. Adults possess a crescent-shaped (lunate) tail fin that enables swift acceleration when evading predators, a small oblique protrusible mouth with weak, reduced canine teeth, throat grinding plates, and fused gill membranes beneath the throat.
Like many wrasses, colouration changes markedly throughout its life cycle. Juveniles display a vibrant violet to reddish-purple body with a row of small black and light spots along their upper back and a black blotch at the front of the dorsal fin. As they mature into initial-phase females, the body adopts a dark purple, violet, or lavender hue with a dark purple or black snout. Older terminal-phase individuals and breeding males develop bright yellow to reddish-orange patches across the lower rear section of the body and abdomen, with courting males exhibiting a blackish head and front dorsal fin.
