Tube sponges encompass several prominent marine sponges within the class Demospongiae, most notably species in the genera Aplysina and Callyspongia. They characteristically form cylindrical, tube-like structures arising from an anchored base attached to hard reef substrates. These tubes can appear as isolated single cylinders or grow in massive clusters consisting of up to 22 individual tubes. Colours vary dramatically across species and light conditions, ranging from bright yellow, golden, and orange-brown to soft pink, lavender, grey, and brown, as well as blue hues.

Tube sponges serve an essential ecological role on coral and rocky reefs. By constantly pumping and filtering sea water through their porous bodies, they clarify surrounding waters, aiding sunlight penetration for photosynthesising reef life and facilitating nutrient recycling. Furthermore, their hollow cylindrical interiors create specialized microhabitats that offer sanctuary to smaller reef creatures, including small fish like gobies, invertebrates, and brittle stars that shelter within the central cavity.
