The reef stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) belongs to the scorpionfish family Scorpaenidae and is widely recognised as the most venomous fish in the world. Reaching a typical length of 27 cm and a maximum recorded total length of 40 cm, this thick-set teleost possesses a wide, flattened head with small upward-pointing eyes separated by a deep depression. Its mouth is broad and upturned, set into a permanent scowl. Unlike most marine fishes, the stonefish completely lacks scales; its tough, rough skin is instead covered in numerous warty growths that frequently host living algae, hydroids, and sediment particles.
Coloration is highly variable, ranging from drab brown and grey to mottled patches of yellow, orange, or red. This irregular texture and tone render the animal virtually indistinguishable from surrounding coral rubble, algae-covered rocks, or sandy substrates. Along its dorsal ridge, the stonefish carries 12 to 14 (typically 13) stout, needle-sharp spines. Each spine is encased in a thick sheath of skin connected to venom glands at its base, capable of delivering a potent cocktail of proteinaceous neurotoxins, hemolytics, and cardiotoxins when depressed.

They typically remain motionless, camouflaged amongst rocks or coral, ambushing prey such as small fish and crustaceans. Activity levels are generally low, focusing on maintaining their disguise. Spawning typically involves broadcast spawning, where both eggs and sperm are released into the water column, allowing for external fertilisation.
