The ribbon eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita), also known as the leaf-nosed moray eel or bernis eel, is the sole member of the genus Rhinomuraena. Renowned among scuba divers for its delicate, ribbon-like appearance and striking coloration, this species is easily recognised by its hugely expanded, leaf-like anterior nostrils and wide, rhythmically opening jaws. With an extraordinarily slender, laterally compressed body supported by up to 255 vertebrae, it ranks amongst the most narrow and elongated eel species known.
Uniquely among moray eels, the ribbon eel undergoes dramatic colour changes that correspond directly to its physical development and sequential hermaphroditic sex changes. All individuals begin life as large greenish leptocephalus larvae before settling into a jet-black juvenile and subadult stage featuring a bright yellow dorsal fin. As they mature into functional adult males, their body colour transforms into a vibrant cobalt blue with yellow accents around the snout, lower jaw, and continuous dorsal fin.
Once an adult male attains a larger size—typically exceeding 94 cm—it transitions into a fully mature female. During this female phase, which culminates in egg-laying, the eel's body turns completely bright yellow or yellow with faint blue posterior highlights, reaching a maximum length of 1.3 metres. Despite these conspicuous visual shifts, scientific research demonstrates that ribbon eels possess only a single type of photoreceptor cell, rendering them colourblind. Consequently, visual hue plays no significant role in their mating interactions.
Ribbon eels are diurnal predators that spend the majority of their lives anchored inside sand burrows or reef crevices. Divers commonly spot them with their head and anterior body extending gracefully from the seabed, opening and closing their mouths to pump water over their gills. Their combination of vivid electric colours, peculiar nostrils, and theatrical head-bobbing displays makes them one of the most sought-after subjects for underwater macro photographers across the tropical Indo-Pacific.

The ribbon eel, Rhinomuraena quaesita, typically exhibits a solitary existence, often seen with its head and anterior body protruding from sand or rock crevices, awaiting prey. Despite its reclusive nature, it is an active predator, ambushing small fish from its burrow. Its striking colouration changes throughout its life: juveniles are black, transitioning to blue with yellow fins as males, and finally to entirely yellow as females. This remarkable sequential hermaphroditism is a key aspect of its reproductive strategy. All ribbon eels mature first as males, eventually transforming into females to facilitate reproduction. While specific details on mating rituals, clutch size, or incubation periods are not extensively documented in the wild, it is understood that they are oviparous, laying eggs. The transformation into a female and subsequent egg-laying represents the culmination of their unique reproductive cycle, ensuring the continuation of the species through distinct developmental phases and sex changes.
