The Caribbean reef squid (Sepioteuthis sepioidea) is a small, shallow-water cephalopod reaching a mantle length of 12 to 20 cm and an overall length of around 20 cm. Unlike many pelagic squids, its wide, oval mantle features broad undulating fins extending along almost its entire length, giving it a cuttlefish-like profile. It possesses eight short arms and two longer, retractable tentacles equipped with sucker-bearing clubs surrounding a central mouth. Its large, prominent eyes feature asymmetric W-shaped pupils designed to balance light across its field of vision.

This species is renowned for its extraordinary ability to communicate visually through neural control of skin chromatophores, iridophores, and leucophores. Divers frequently observe swift colour shifts ranging from translucent gold and amber to iridescent shades of green, blue, and red. Remarkably, a reef squid can broadcast two completely different signals simultaneously—displaying one pattern to a neighbour on its right while displaying a different one to a squid on its left. Over 35 distinct chromatophore patterns have been catalogued, serving roles in courtship, camouflage, species recognition, and alarm.
Specific body postures further augment their visual repertoire. When mildly alarmed, a squid turns its brow ridges bright gold and its central arms white. Facing imminent danger, it pales dramatically to retreat into open water or shifts to dark brown or reddish tones to blend into surrounding coral structures. If cornered, it ejects a cloud of dark brown or black ink that obscures a predator's vision, masks its scent, and releases unpalatable deterrent chemicals. Squids also orient vertically upward prior to striking prey, curl upward during territorial disputes, and point head-down when approached by open-water predators.
