The Atlantic goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) is one of the largest species of bony fish in the world and the heaviest bony fish inhabiting western Atlantic reefs. Reaching lengths of up to 2.5 metres and weighing up to 363 kilograms, this magnificent creature is instantly recognisable by its broad, flat head, small eyes, rounded caudal fin, and broad, barrel-shaped body covered in ctenoid scales. Its coloration ranges from brownish-yellow to greyish-green, adorned with dark spots across the head, body, and fins.
Younger individuals under one metre in length display three to four faint vertical bars along their sides. Unlike many other large predatory reef fish, goliath groupers lack front canine teeth, possessing instead three to five rows of small teeth on their lower jaw. Their dorsal fins are continuous, with soft dorsal rays extending longer than the spines of the first dorsal fin, while their rounded pectoral fins are noticeably larger than their pelvic fins.

Goliath Groupers are typically solitary, ambush predators as adults, often found in rocky reefs, shipwrecks, and mangrove habitats, though they can aggregate in large numbers at specific times. They are largely diurnal, exhibiting more activity during daylight hours. This species undergoes broadcast spawning, a common reproductive strategy among marine fish, releasing eggs and sperm into the water column for external fertilisation. Spawning aggregations occur annually, primarily between July and September in the northern hemisphere, often coinciding with full moon phases. Females release millions of pelagic eggs, which hatch into larvae within 24-48 hours. These larvae then drift with currents, eventually settling in shallow, brackish mangrove estuaries where they spend their juvenile phase, benefiting from the abundant food and protection. They reach sexual maturity at approximately 4-6 years of age, transitioning to offshore reefs as they grow larger.
