Marine angelfish (family Pomacanthidae) are among the most striking and conspicuous inhabitants of tropical reefs worldwide. Found across the tropical Atlantic, Indian, and western Pacific Oceans, these fish are renowned for their brilliant coloration and deep, laterally compressed bodies. Ranging from small pygmy species under 15 centimetres to large specimens up to 60 centimetres in length, they fill a diverse array of ecological niches across coral reef ecosystems. Although similar in appearance to butterflyfishes, marine angelfish are readily distinguished by the presence of strong preopercle spines located on the lower edge of their gill covers. This anatomical feature gives the family its name, derived from the Greek words poma (cover) and akantha (thorn). Many species also feature elegant streamer-like extensions on their soft dorsal and anal fins, paired with relatively large pectoral fins and rounded to lunate tail fins. Angelfish display remarkable colour shifts between juvenile and adult life stages. Young individuals often exhibit striking neon or electric blue patterns with distinct vertical lines or spots that fade into completely different adult coloration as they mature. All marine angelfish are protogynous hermaphrodites. In species that form harems consisting of a dominant male and several females, the loss of the primary male prompts the dominant female to transition into a fully functional male to maintain the social hierarchy. Angelfish, belonging to the family Pomacanthidae, typically exhibit varied social behaviours, ranging from solitary individuals to monogamous pairs, and occasionally small harems or groups depending on the species and habitat. They are predominantly diurnal, actively foraging for sponges, algae, and small invertebrates during daylight hours and seeking shelter in reef crevices at night. Reproduction in angelfish is primarily through broadcast spawning. During this process, which often occurs at dusk, a male and female pair rise in the water column, releasing gametes simultaneously into the open water where fertilisation takes place externally. While a distinct spawning season is not universally documented for all species, it often correlates with lunar cycles in some. The fertilised eggs are pelagic and drift with currents, eventually hatching into larval forms. These larvae undergo a planktonic stage before settling as juveniles onto the reef. Clutch sizes can be substantial, though precise numbers vary widely and are often unquantified in wild populations. Development to sexual maturity can take several years. For scuba divers, marine angelfish are a highlight of reef dives. While smaller species and certain shy varieties hide among coral crevices, many larger species are notably bold and seemingly fearless, occasionally swimming directly toward divers to inspect them. During the day, they actively roam the reef in search of food or tend to established territories, before retreating into deep nooks, caves, and overhangs when night falls.

Observing marine angelfish underwater requires an understanding of their diurnal routines and social structure. Larger species, such as gray or emperor angelfish, are often curious and bold, frequently approaching stationary divers. To encourage these close encounters, maintain neutral buoyancy, move smoothly, and avoid making sudden arm gestures toward the fish. Smaller dwarf angelfish and shy species like the queen angelfish are more elusive; avoid cornering them, as they will promptly retreat into deep coral crevices or reef caves. Divers should focus their search around structural reef zones such as ledges, overhangs, channels, and cave entrances where adults habitually forage or rest. Keep an eye out in surge channels and shallow reef flats for juveniles, which can sometimes be observed establishing cleaning stations to pick ectoparasites off larger marine life. During dusk dives, look toward the upper water column along reef drop-offs where mated pairs perform elaborate, spiralling courtship dances prior to pelagic spawning. Always respect their territory and avoid disturbing harem groups.

Because marine angelfish are non-migratory reef residents inhabiting tropical and subtropical waters, encounters are possible year-round across their geographic range. Populations remain stable in major diving destinations including the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, the Caribbean, and the Indo-Pacific. Local conditions, water clarity, and sea temperature dictate overall diving quality, but angelfish remain present on their home reefs throughout every season. Spawning behaviour, however, follows distinct temporal patterns that divers can track. Spawning typically takes place at dusk or during the night, with certain species, such as the queen angelfish, timing their reproductive cycles around the full moon. During these periods, paired individuals ascend together into the upper water column to release buoyant eggs. Visiting tropical reefs during stable weather periods and planning dusk or night dives around lunar phases provides the best opportunity to observe these intricate reproductive behaviors in the wild.

Habitat

Marine angelfish are distributed across tropical reefs in the Atlantic, Indian, and mostly western Pacific Oceans. Their geographical distribution spans key marine regions from the Red Sea and East Africa across to the central Pacific islands, as well as the warm waters of the Western Atlantic and Caribbean. A few vagrants and Lessepsian migrants have even established presence in non-native waters like Florida or the eastern Mediterranean. Most species are restricted to shallow reef zones, rarely venturing deeper than 50 metres. However, their depth distribution extends across a wide vertical gradient depending on the species; for instance, the royal angelfish occurs from 0 to 80 metres, the emperor angelfish ranges between 1 and 100 metres, and specialized deep-water species like *Centropyge abei* inhabit depths down to 150 metres. Within these ranges, angelfish occupy diverse reef habitats including shallow outer reef flats, surge channels, sheltered lagoons, seaward reef walls, and dark underwater caves.

Diet

Marine angelfish are primarily diurnal feeders that spend the daylight hours foraging across the reef surface. Feeding habits within the family vary significantly by genus. Many species focus heavily on sessile benthic invertebrates, with sponges, tunicates, bryozoans, and hydroids forming the staple of their diet. On Caribbean coral reefs, sponge-eating angelfish play a vital ecological role by consuming fast-growing sponge species, which prevents them from overgrowing and smothering reef-building corals. Other genera display specialized feeding strategies. Species in the genus *Genicanthus* feed primarily on zooplankton drifting in the water column, whereas dwarf angelfish of the genus *Centropyge* prefer grazing on filamentous algae attached to substrate. Additionally, juveniles of many angelfish species, as well as adults of certain species like the emperor angelfish, function as cleaner fish, feeding on ectoparasites gleaned from the scales and gills of larger reef fishes.
