Crinoid shrimp, also referred to as feather star shrimp, belong to several decapod genera—including Brucecaris, Hippolyte, and Laomenes. These tiny crustaceans are obligate associates of crinoids (feather stars), residing directly upon their host's feathery arms and central disc. Because feather stars possess stiff, spiny structures and chemical defences that deter potential predators, living among their arms provides these delicate crustaceans with an exceptionally secure natural refuge on the reef.
Reaching maximum total lengths of just 2 to 3 centimetres (20 to 30 millimetres), crinoid shrimp exhibit extraordinary camouflage. Their colouration and banded patterns match their host feather star with striking precision. A shrimp inhabiting a black and yellow crinoid displays black and yellow markings, while one on a red host appears vibrant red. This colour matching is so precise that individuals of the same species living on different reefs can look entirely distinct. Exactly how this adaptation develops remains uncertain, whether determined early in life, chosen via host selection, or modified over time.

Crinoid shrimp, typically species of Brucecaris, exhibit a highly specialised commensal lifestyle, usually found in pairs on specific crinoid hosts, adopting a camouflage coloration that matches their host. Their activity patterns are closely tied to their host's behaviour, often remaining hidden amongst the crinoid's arms, emerging to feed on mucus or detritus. Reproduction in Brucecaris spp. is oviparous, with females carrying clutches of eggs externally on their pleopods until hatching. While specific mating seasons are not extensively documented across all species, the continuous presence of ovigerous females in some populations suggests that reproduction may occur year-round in suitable environmental conditions. Clutch size can vary, but females typically carry numerous small eggs. Following an incubation period, the eggs hatch into planktonic larval stages, which undergo several moults before settling and metamorphosing into juvenile shrimp, eventually seeking out a crinoid host. The journey to sexual maturity then commences.
