Cowries are marine gastropod molluscs belonging to the family Cypraeidae, instantly recognisable by their glossy, egg-shaped shells featuring a narrow, toothed ventral aperture. Unlike most sea snails, adult cowries lack a visible spire or an operculum, presenting an unbroken, polished dome that exhibits striking patterns ranging from the fine leopard-like rosettes of the tiger cowrie (Cypraea tigris) to the subdued golden bands of the money cowrie (Monetaria moneta). What truly surprises divers in the water is the animal's fleshy, retractable mantle, which completely envelops the shell when undisturbed. This mantle is frequently adorned with ornate, finger-like papillae and distinct mottled colours that contrast wildly with the glossy porcelain beneath, serving as both camouflage and a protective shield that keeps the shell free of encrusting algae, hydroids, and parasites. These slow-moving invertebrates are predominantly nocturnal, spending daylight hours tucked deep inside reef crevices, under limestone ledges, beneath coral rubble, or nestled at the bases of sponges and branching corals. Cowries are primarily encountered on night dives or within dark reef overhangs during the day. Excellent neutral buoyancy is mandatory when inspecting crevices to avoid contacting sensitive coral heads or crushing delicate invertebrates. Approach slowly without projecting an intense, direct dive torch beam; cowries are sensitive to sudden light changes and will rapidly retract their ornate mantle inside the shell, obscuring their most intricate biological feature. Use a subdued red focus light when setting up photography shots, switching on strobes only for the exposure. For macro photography, a 60mm or 105mm lens is ideal for capturing the detailed texture of the mantle papillae and cephalic tentacles. Never attempt to pry a cowrie off the reef or force its mantle to retract; touching the animal strips its protective mucus and can damage delicate mantle tissues. Always leave rocks and rubble exactly as you found them.

Best Season

Cowries are present year-round throughout tropical waters, but dive conditions dictate the best encounter windows. In the Red Sea of Egypt, optimal conditions run from May to October when water temperatures peak and night dives reveal tiger cowries grazing along the outer fringing walls. The Coral Triangle, including Raja Ampat and Komodo in Indonesia, delivers exceptional biodiversity from October to April and April to November respectively, offering calm seas and superb night diving. In the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the warmest months between November and March offer ideal conditions for spotting cowries tucked into branching corals and bommies. In the Maldives, the dry northeast monsoon from December to April brings crystalline visibility and gentle currents across the central atolls.

Habitat

Cowries are characteristic inhabitants of warm tropical and subtropical marine realms, with the vast majority of species inhabiting the Indo-Pacific, Red Sea, and Caribbean. They are most commonly found in shallow reef zones from the intertidal fringe down to 40 metres, though a few deep-water specialists exist on offshore banks beyond 100 metres. Divers encounter them across diverse microhabitats, including sheltered lagoons, seaward reef crests, surge channels, and vertical drop-offs. By day, cowries wedge themselves under dead coral slabs, within deep recesses of massive porous corals, beneath overhangs, and amongst seagrass beds. They thrive in clean, oxygen-rich waters surrounding oceanic atolls and fringing reefs, avoiding heavily silted bays with high sedimentation rates.

Diet

Cowries possess a versatile, largely omnivorous or specialised herbivorous diet that varies widely by species. Most larger varieties, including the iconic tiger cowrie, are active nocturnal grazers that scour hard substrates using a tough, ribbon-like radula lined with microscopic chitinous teeth. They rasp away microalgae, encrusting macroalgae, and cyanobacterial films that coat dead coral surfaces. Other cowrie species have adapted to carnivorous or fungivorous diets, feeding on living animal tissue including encrusting sponges, soft corals, colonial hydroids, and sea anemones. Some smaller species are specialized micropredators of colonial ascidians (sea squirts) or bryozoans. Feeding takes place almost exclusively under the cover of darkness, allowing the snail to emerge onto exposed reef faces without falling prey to visual daytime predators like pufferfish, triggerfish, and octopus.
