About Peñon Reef
Peñon Reef is a shallow, extensive coral reef located within Cotubanamá National Park, between Bayahibe and Saona Island. Revered as one of the best diving areas in the Dominican Republic, it features three main dive sites, all with a maximum depth of approximately 7 meters. This shallow profile allows for extended bottom times, benefiting photographers and those keen on observing marine life. Known for its vibrant life and colors, the reef hosts various reef dwellers. Sightings have included five eagle rays gracefully flying across the reef, creating a striking contrast with the yellow, pink, and purple sea fans and sponges. Sea turtles are frequent visitors due to nearby nesting beaches, and octopuses, lobsters, Caribbean squid, and seahorses can also be spotted. The name 'Peñon' means rock, referencing the many rocks along the walls. Its rich biodiversity and clear, brightly illuminated conditions make Peñon Reef a dynamic site where every corner reveals something new and exciting. It's often highlighted for its healthy coral formations and sheer volume of life, including a resident spotted moray eel. Stingrays and glowing calamari may also be encountered.

Conditions & Currents
Moderate currents can run here, so plan drift entries and stay close to the group. The site drops to around 7 metres, so plan your gas and no-decompression limits around the deeper section. It is usually briefed as a dive for beginner divers. It can be dived from a liveaboard or a day boat, depending on where you start the trip. Tide, wind and season all shift the picture from day to day, so the crew's briefing on the boat always overrides any general description.
