The hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) is a large, unique wrasse native to the warm waters of the western Atlantic Ocean. Unlike most other members of the wrasse family, which typically possess slender, cigar-shaped bodies, the hogfish features a deep, laterally compressed, oval body. Its most striking anatomical features include a bright red iris, a pronounced elongate snout used for excavating buried prey, and three or four extended dorsal fin spines that trail dramatically behind the main fin structure.
Colouration varies significantly based on age, sex, and environment. Juveniles and females generally display modest shades of pale grey, brown, or reddish-brown with paler undersides. As females transition into males, they develop more intense markings, featuring a deep dark band extending from the snout across the forehead up to the dorsal fin, bright yellow pectoral fins, and a distinct black spot located behind the pectoral fins. Hogfish also possess an active camouflage mechanism using dermal photoreception, where light-sensitive opsin cells located beneath their skin's chromatophores allow them to detect light changes and adjust their appearance.

Their activity often involves foraging on the seabed for crustaceans and molluscs, using their elongated snout to root through sediment. As protogynous hermaphrodites, all individuals hatch as females, maturing into males later in life, often triggered by social cues such as the absence of a dominant male. Reproduction occurs through broadcast spawning, where eggs and sperm are released directly into the water column. This usually takes place during spring and summer months, with specific spawning aggregations observed. The fertilised eggs are pelagic, developing into larval stages before settling onto the benthos. Information regarding precise clutch sizes, gestation periods, or incubation times in the wild is not extensively documented for this species, but juveniles undergo metamorphosis and mature over several years.
