Clark's anemonefish (Amphiprion clarkii), also known as the yellowtail clownfish, is a small marine fish belonging to the family Pomacentridae. Like all anemonefish, it forms a symbiotic mutualism with sea anemones and remains unaffected by their stinging tentacles. The host anemone provides protection from predators alongside food scraps and occasional dead tentacles, while the fish actively defends the anemone against its own predators and parasites.
The body of Clark's anemonefish is stocky, laterally compressed, and oval to rounded in shape. Males grow up to 10 cm in length, whereas females are larger, reaching up to 15 cm. It exhibits the greatest colour variation of any anemonefish species, with differences determined by geographic location, sex, age, and host anemone type. Adults are typically black dorsally and orange-yellow ventrally, with the black coloration expanding as the fish ages. The snout is orange or pinkish, and the body features two vertical white-to-yellowish bars—one located posterior to the eye and another above the anus—as well as a distinct white caudal peduncle.
Fin coloration offers additional clues for identification in the field. The caudal fin is lighter in tone than the rest of the body; males feature a yellow or white tail with yellow edges, while mature females often possess a solid white caudal fin. Juveniles across all regions are predominantly orange-yellow with vertical white bands. Fish that reside within Mertens' carpet sea anemone (Stichodactyla mertensii) are frequently almost completely black except for a pale snout, white body bars, and a light tail. Occasionally, individuals exhibit a rare eye mutation known as "Pearl Eyes", marked by a pale blue crescent in the upper iris.

Within an anemone, Clark's anemonefish form social groups defined by a strict dominance hierarchy. The largest and most aggressive individual is female and sits at the top of the group. Only the dominant female and the largest male reproduce via external fertilization. As protandrous sequential hermaphrodites, all individuals mature first as males; if the dominant female dies or is removed, the breeding male transitions into a female to take her place.
