The Atlantic spadefish (Chaetodipterus faber) is a ray-finned marine fish belonging to the family Ephippidae. Endemic to the western Atlantic Ocean, it is the sole representative of its family residing in this region. Visually striking with a distinctively compressed, disc-shaped body and a blunt snout, it is occasionally mistaken by divers for reef angelfish, though it is easily distinguished by possessing two separate dorsal fins—the first spiny and the second soft-rayed.
Adult spadefish possess elongated anterior lobes on their second dorsal and anal fins, giving them a swept-back, graceful profile. Their colouration features a silver to silvery-grey body marked by four to six dark vertical black bands on each side. The first band runs directly through the eye, whilst the final band crosses the caudal peduncle. These vertical bars tend to fade or become obscure as the fish grows older. The small mouth contains brushlike teeth without any teeth on the roof of the mouth, and the entire head and fins are covered in fine ctenoid scales.

Atlantic Spadefish exhibit a primarily diurnal activity pattern, often observed in large, cohesive schools ranging from a few individuals to several hundred, particularly around reefs, wrecks, and pilings in coastal waters. These schools display an organised, synchronous swimming behaviour, moving slowly and deliberately through their habitat. While their social dynamics are not fully understood, they appear to forage communally on invertebrates. Reproduction in Atlantic Spadefish is characterised by broadcast spawning, where eggs and sperm are released into the water column. Spawning typically occurs offshore, primarily during the warmer months, often from late spring through summer, although specific peak periods can vary geographically. The fertilised eggs are pelagic, drifting with currents. Larvae are also pelagic, developing offshore before recruiting to coastal nursery habitats. Juveniles often mimic detritus to avoid predation, a distinctive developmental stage. Sexual maturity is generally reached within two years.
