About Half Mile Reef
Half Mile Reef is a prominent offshore dive site situated east of French Cay, earning its name from its considerable length. This impressive coral formation is a highlight of the Caicos Islands' stunning underwater landscape, contributing to the region's reputation for exceptional reef attributes. The reef features diverse topography, including areas where specific sections of the reef structure naturally reduce the current's pull. A notable characteristic is the presence of two massive elephant ear sponges, each spanning seven to eight feet across, found approximately 20 feet apart at a depth curve around 85 feet. The site is part of the extensive Caicos Banks, renowned for its dramatic wall diving, with many locations accessible from Providenciales. Divers frequently encounter large schools of barracuda and mahogany snappers amidst the vibrant reef system. French Cay, where this site is located, is particularly famous for shark encounters, including grey and nurse sharks. Between July and September, nurse sharks gather around French Cay for mating, offering opportunities to see dozens of these bottom feeders during a single dive. Regarded as an advanced dive site, Half Mile Reef promises a dynamic underwater experience.
