Spider crabs are crustaceans characterized by thick, rounded or oval carapaces and long, spindly, spider-like legs. The group includes several notable species, most famously the Japanese giant spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi), which holds the title for the largest leg-span of any living arthropod on Earth. Reaching distances of up to 3.75 metres from claw to claw and weighing up to 19 kilograms, these slow-moving invertebrates are impressive ocean giants. Other regional varieties include the sheep crab (Loxorhynchus grandis) of the Eastern Pacific and the European spider crab (Maja squinado).
Visually striking, spider crabs often exhibit a bumpy, spiny exoskeleton with mottled orange and white coloration along their appendages and a cream-colored underside. Spines protect their short eye stalks, and their oval body shapes give them a distinct arachnid appearance. Males are generally larger than females and possess noticeably longer chelipeds (claw-bearing legs), whereas females feature broader abdomens designed to carry massive clutches of fertilised eggs. Despite their formidable size and sharp-looking claws, spider crabs are known to possess a remarkably gentle disposition.

The Japanese spider crab, Macrocheira kaempferi, generally exhibits a solitary existence, inhabiting deep, cold waters of the Pacific Ocean and typically moving slowly across the seabed in search of food. While not considered social, multiple individuals may occasionally be observed in close proximity on feeding grounds. Their reproduction is oviparous, with females carrying fertilised eggs externally on their pleopods until hatching. Although specific details regarding mating seasons and clutch sizes are not extensively documented, females are known to brood a substantial number of eggs. The incubation period is thought to be lengthy due to the cold deep-sea environment, potentially spanning several months before larvae hatch. Larval development occurs through several planktonic stages, drifting in the water column before settling to the seafloor and developing into juveniles. These crabs reach sexual maturity at a considerable size and age, reflecting their extended lifespan in the deep-sea.
