The honeycomb trunkfish (Acanthostracion polygonius), also known as the honeycomb cowfish, is a distinctive ray-finned marine fish belonging to the boxfish family (Ostraciidae). Widespread across the tropical western Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, Florida, Bermuda, and south to Brazil, it is a favourite find among recreational divers due to its unusual boxy shape, prominent forward-facing horns, and elaborate geometric body markings.
The body of the honeycomb trunkfish is largely enclosed within a triangular, rigid bony carapace composed of thick, fused hexagonal scale plates. Its background colour varies between shades of blue, green, yellow, grey, and brown, with blue being the most common. Each hexagonal scute features a dark outer ring with a pale border and a lighter centre, creating a striking honeycomb network across the flanks. On the cheeks, these dark rings form a reticulated pattern, setting it apart from the related scrawled cowfish (Acanthostracion quadricornis), which possesses horizontal cheek stripes. Two sharp spines situated directly above the eyes resemble horns, earning the species its cowfish moniker.
Additional anatomical features include a small, puckered protrusible mouth with fleshy lips, conical teeth numbering fewer than 15 per jaw, short gill slits placed in front of translucent pectoral fins, and a rounded, broom-like tail attached to a flexible caudal peduncle. Lacking pelvic fins, the fish relies on ostraciform locomotion for movement. Adults reach a maximum total length of 50 centimetres, though average lengths range between 18 and 38 centimetres. Juveniles exhibit a rounder profile, brighter green coloration, and greater agility in the water compared to the rigid, triangular adults.

Honeycomb trunkfish are diurnal creatures that are generally solitary or observed in small trios consisting of a single male and two females. When threatened, they can adjust their coloration to blend seamlessly with surrounding coral heads or remain completely stationary for extended periods to avoid detection by predators. Like other boxfishes, their skin secretes a protective toxic mucus when under stress, and their hard bony shell makes them unpalatable to many larger reef predators. Reproduction occurs in open water, where a male and female pair rapidly ascend toward the surface, broadcast their gametes, and quickly return to the shelter of the reef.
