Belonging to the scorpionfish family Scorpaenidae, these extraordinary demersal predators are celebrated for their bizarre morphologic adaptations, vibrant colouration, and elaborate camouflage. The genus name derives from the Greek words rhino (snout) and op (eye), reflecting the fish's distinctively upturned snout and prominent, raised orbital structures.

Rhinopias scorpionfish are generally solitary and sedentary, relying on their elaborate camouflage to ambush prey rather than actively hunting. They are primarily nocturnal, moving slowly across the substrate or remaining motionless during the day, using their unique appendages to mimic algae or debris. Observations suggest a lack of complex social behaviour, with individuals typically encountered alone. The specific reproductive biology of Rhinopias is not extensively documented in the wild. However, like many other scorpionfish, they are believed to be oviparous, releasing eggs that are fertilised externally. Spawning events, including specific seasons or precise clutch sizes, are not widely reported.
