Dartfish, belonging primarily to the subfamily Ptereleotrinae within the goby family, are slender, elongated marine teleosts renowned for their delicate beauty and rapid movements. Ranging from roughly 6 to 14 centimetres in length, these fish possess sleek, laterally compressed bodies covered in tiny cycloid or ctenoid scales. Their colouration varies dramatically across species, spanning brilliant pastel hues of pearlescent white, electric blue, sunset orange, and fiery red. Many prominent species, such as the fire dartfish (Nemateleotris magnifica) and the scissortail dartfish (Ptereleotris evides), feature elongated, whip-like first dorsal fins that can be raised and flicked rapidly. Their large, expressive eyes are adapted to spot minute suspended particles in the water column, whilst their continuous lower fins and fan-like caudo-dorsal profiles allow for rapid directional shifts.

They are generally considered territorial, though many species form small, loose aggregations or pairs, especially when feeding on zooplankton in the water column. When threatened, they rapidly retreat into their self-constructed burrows or utilise existing crevices, often sharing these refuges with commensal gobies or invertebrates. Regarding their reproduction, dartfish are oviparous, laying eggs which are typically demersal and adhesive, often attached to the walls of a burrow or a hard surface. Parental care, frequently involving the male guarding the eggs, is common across the subfamily. While specific spawning seasons can vary geographically, many species breed throughout warmer months. Clutch sizes are generally high, consisting of numerous small eggs, though precise figures vary between species. Hatching typically occurs after a few days to a week of incubation, releasing pelagic larvae that develop in the open water before settling to a benthic existence.
