Crayfish, also known as crawdads, mudbugs, or yabbies, are freshwater decapod crustaceans closely related to marine lobsters. Their body structure comprises twenty segments divided into two primary regions: a joined head and thorax (cephalothorax) and a flexible, segmented abdomen. Covered in a protective exoskeleton composed of chitin, they possess ten legs across five pairs. The most prominent pair consists of large front claws, known as chelae, which are used for defence, burrowing, and capturing prey. Physical colouration varies widely across the 500 to 700 known species, ranging from muted sandy yellow, tan, dark brown, and olive green to striking shades of red, orange, purple, and blue. A pointed rostrum extends from the front of the head, shielding their compound eyes.

As solitary benthic organisms, crayfish interact primarily during territorial contests or mating encounters. They act as critical keystone species within their native ecosystems, processing organic matter and serving as a major food source for fish, birds, turtles, and mammals. Primary burrowing species construct deep underground tunnel systems reaching the water table, creating surface mud towers called "chimneys" up to eight inches high. These burrows provide shelter for numerous other organisms, including dragonflies and snakes.
