The rock beauty (Holacanthus tricolor) is a striking marine ray-finned fish in the angelfish family Pomacanthidae. As the smallest angelfish species inhabiting the Atlantic Ocean, it typically reaches adult lengths between 13 and 20 centimetres, with a maximum recorded total length of 35 centimetres. Characterised by its deep, oval, and strongly compressed discus-shaped body, this species is one of the most visually distinctive and recognizable inhabitants of tropical Atlantic coral ecosystems.
Adult rock beauties possess a dramatic colouration that makes them immediately noticeable to underwater observers. The head, anterior body quarter, pectoral, pelvic, and caudal fins are a brilliant yellow. This bright yellow frames a large, solid black patch covering the mid-to-rear torso, dorsal, and anal fins. Additional fine details include black, purple, or navy-blue lips, bright blue accents on the upper and lower portions of the iris, and orange or red margins on the operculum and fin edges. Juveniles exhibit a strikingly different appearance, starting life almost entirely yellow with a single blue-margined black spot under the rear dorsal fin. As the juvenile matures, this spot expands across the body like ink spreading across paper until the full adult pattern is established.

The Rock Beauty, Holacanthus tricolor, typically exhibits a solitary existence as an adult, although juveniles may occasionally form small groups. This diurnal species is often observed grazing on sponges and algae within its coral reef habitat, actively foraging throughout the day. Its reproduction is characterised by broadcast spawning, a common strategy among reef fish where eggs and sperm are released directly into the water column. Spawning events for this species are often reported during the warmer months, particularly between April and November in its Atlantic range, though specific peak periods can vary geographically. Mating pairs engage in an ascending swim, releasing gametes at the apex of their ascent. Fertilised eggs are pelagic, drifting in the open water until they hatch into larval stages. The larvae are planktonic, developing before settling onto the reef as juveniles. Precise figures for clutch size or incubation periods are not widely documented, but maturity is generally reached within one to two years.
