Its broad, kite-shaped disc features sharply pointed, falcate pectoral fins resembling wings. The dorsal surface exhibits a uniform brown, dark olive, or golden-bronze hue, perfectly countershaded by a starkly contrasting white or yellowish-white belly. The head is distinctly elevated from the disc, bearing wide-set, prominent eyes and spiracles located just behind them. Extending behind the disc is a long, slender, whip-like tail equipped with one or two serrated, venomous barbs situated near the base just behind a small dorsal fin, offering defense against apex predators. Ecologically, the cownose ray is an agile, benthopelagic migrant inhabiting temperate and tropical coastal waters of the western Atlantic Ocean. While capable of solitary browsing, it is renowned for forming spectacular, highly synchronised aggregations that can number in the hundreds or even thousands. These massive schools glide gracefully through the water column using continuous, rhythmic wing-flaps. Migrating seasonally in response to water temperature and food availability, these rays play a pivotal role in coastal ecosystems by constantly aerating sediments and reshaping soft benthic topography during their intensive foraging for buried invertebrates.
