The blueberry tunicate (Clavelina moluccensis) is one of the most visually arrestingly coloured invertebrate species inhabiting tropical coral reefs. Often referred to as the blue sea squirt or blue bell tunicate, this colonial ascidian is celebrated for its luminous, translucent blue-to-violet hues, which resemble clusters of miniature neon berries. Individual zooids measure between one and two centimetres in length and grow attached to a common stolon, congregating in dense colonies that can spread across several tens of centimetres. Each vase-shaped zooid possesses a transparent tunic through which internal anatomical structures, such as the pharyngeal basket and internal organs, are subtly visible. The most distinctive identifying markers are the striking, intense blue patches or ring-like markings situated around the incurrent and excurrent siphons, giving the colony its characteristic glowing appearance beneath tropical waters. Ecologically, the blueberry tunicate plays a vital functional role in the benthic architecture of Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Colonising shaded overhangs, vertical wall faces, and dead coral skeletons, these sessile invertebrates are filter feeders that extract organic debris and micro-organisms directly from the water column. As chordates, they represent an evolutionary bridge between simple invertebrates and vertebrate life, possessing a rudimentary notochord during their brief larval stage. Colonies reproduce both sexually, releasing free-swimming tadpole larvae, and asexually via budding, which allows them to rapidly monopolise prime rocky substrates where prevailing currents ensure a constant supply of nutrients. They thrive in areas exposed to moderate water movement, avoiding regions of heavy sedimentation that might clog their delicate siphons. When observing and photographing blueberry tunicates, absolute buoyancy control is essential. Because these delicate ascidians inhabit sheer drop-offs, caves, and overhangs, divers should remain in a horizontal trim well clear of the reef wall to avoid accidental contact with fragile corals and benthic life. Take care not to generate downdraughts with fin kicks, which stir up silt and cause the zooids to contract their siphons defensively. For macro photographers, approaching slowly from the side ensures the siphons remain fully distended and open. Mount twin strobes with diffusers or use a focused snoot to illuminate the translucent tunic without causing backscatter from suspended particles. A 60mm or 100mm macro lens is ideal for capturing the fine anatomical details, including the siphon rings and any commensal crustaceans nestled between zooids.

For prime sightings in Indonesia, the dry season from May to October offers sensational visibility across Komodo and the Alor Archipelago, alongside calm surface conditions. Raja Ampat hits its peak liveaboard window between October and April, when nutrient-rich upwellings fuel thriving benthic life. Habitat

Blueberry tunicates are broadly distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific. The waters this animal calls home span the biodiversity epicenter of the Coral Triangle, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and extending southwards to the Great Barrier Reef and Western Australia. They typically inhabit depths ranging from 5 to 35 metres, occasionally extending deeper along clear oceanic drop-offs. These colonial ascidians exhibit a strong preference for hard, current-swept substrate, frequently anchoring to dead coral matrix, limestone overhangs, cavern entrances, artificial reefs, and vertical pinnacle walls where tidal currents bring plentiful suspended nutrients while preventing silt accumulation.

Diet

The blueberry tunicate is an obligate suspension filter feeder that sustains itself on microscopic plankton, suspended organic particulate matter, and free-floating marine bacteria. Each individual zooid within the colony creates an internal water current by beating thousands of microscopic cilia lining its pharyngeal basket. Water enters through the oral incurrent siphon and passes through a fine, mucous-coated branchial sieve where organic food particles are ensnared. The trapped nutrients are conveyed along ciliated food grooves straight into the digestive tract, while filtered, deoxygenated water and metabolic waste products are expelled outward through the atrial excurrent siphon. This continuous filtering process occurs around the clock, unaffected by day or night, relying on oceanic currents to deliver a steady supply of nutrient-rich particulate matter directly to the colony.
