About Dhigurah Beyru
Dhigurah Beyru, located in the South Ari Atoll near Dhigurah Island, is an outer-reef dive site distinguished by its exposure to the open sea rather than a sheltered lagoon. This expansive reef is particularly noted for attracting larger pelagic species, especially whale sharks and manta rays, making it a key destination for divers and snorkelers seeking encounters with these magnificent creatures. The reef top begins at a relatively shallow depth of 5 to 8 meters and gradually slopes down, leading to a terrace at around 30 meters. In some sections, the reef transitions into a steeper wall with small overhangs that extend beyond 40 meters. The topography of the site includes rocks, outcroppings, and hard corals, though soft corals are also present. Marine life is abundant and diverse, with schools of fusiliers, various tropical fish like butterflyfish, parrotfish, and jackfish, as well as sea turtles and eagle rays traversing the blue. The reef itself hosts moray eels, leaf fish, shrimp, and a variety of macro life. Beyond the headline whale sharks, divers might also encounter blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, guitar sharks, and Napoleon wrasse. Whale shark sightings are particularly frequent year-round, especially during slack tide when they often gather closer to the surface. This site is typically accessed by boat, with dive plans often dictated by currents that can range from moderate to strong depending on the tide and reef orientation. It accommodates all levels of divers, but comfort with currents and open-water drift diving is recommended.

Conditions & Currents
Currents at Dhigurah Beyru are a significant factor, ranging from moderate to strong and heavily influenced by tidal movements and the specific orientation of the reef. Due to this, the dive route often involves a current-dependent drift along either the right or left shoulder of the reef. Divers typically make a boat entry, and the dive remains boat-based throughout. Visibility is generally good on favorable days, but conditions can fluctuate. Given the potential for strong currents and heavy boat traffic during whale shark searching, using a surface marker buoy (SMB) is highly recommended for diver safety and easier pickup. The site is suitable for all certification levels, but comfort with drift diving and managing currents is advisable for a more enjoyable experience, particularly for less experienced divers.
