About Bodu Thila
Bodu Thila, the most substantial of three submerged pinnacles in its vicinity, is situated advantageously near the Maldivian atoll's outer boundary. This prime location contributes significantly to its remarkable biodiversity, making it a compelling destination for divers. Despite potentially strong currents, the site remains accessible even for novice divers due to a sheltered entry point. The dive commences in a sandy patch at depths of three to four meters, leading into an extensive area populated by garden eels. As you progress, the topography transforms into a fascinating network of caves, sheer cliff walls, and overhangs. These formations are richly adorned with dense sea fans and black coral bushes, creating intricate underwater landscapes. The descent can reach a maximum depth of 30 meters, with the most engaging caves and overhangs typically found between 15 and 30 meters on the northern side, while the western wall is steep and the eastern slopes gently. Marine life here is vibrant and diverse, encompassing schools of fusiliers, large Napoleon wrasse, bannerfish, and feather stars. Turtles are commonly sighted, and the site's proximity to the atoll's edge enhances the variety of species encountered. As you conclude the dive and ascend for your safety stop, you'll pass over a varied terrain of colorful corals, adding a final burst of visual appeal. Bodu Thila is well-known for encountering strong currents, particularly given its location near the atoll's outer rim. Despite this, the dive is managed by starting in a protected sandy area, allowing for a controlled entry. Due to these currents, dive operations at Bodu Thila are typically conducted as drift dives, meaning divers move with the flow rather than against it. Divers should be equipped with a surface marker buoy (SMB) and a reef hook is recommended for maintaining position if desired. While visibility is generally excellent, strong currents can occasionally impact clarity. Thermoclines are not specifically mentioned as a common factor.
