Pipehorses are fascinating members of the syngnathid family, occupying an evolutionary sweet spot between true seahorses and pipefish. Classified primarily within the genera Acentronura, Amphelikturus, Idiotropiscis, and Solegnathus, these miniature masters of disguise possess elongated, armour-plated bodies encircled by rigid bony rings. Unlike typical pipefish, pipehorses feature a distinct bend at the neck, mimicking the noble profile of a seahorse while maintaining a more horizontal, pipe-like posture. They possess a prehensile tail that lacks a caudal fin, allowing them to anchor tightly to bottom structures. Their diminutive heads taper into a tiny, tubular snout with an upturned, toothless mouth. Coloration is extraordinarily variable and adaptive, ranging from mottled mossy greens, algae-flecked browns, and cryptic tans to vibrant yellows and crusted reds, frequently accented with tiny skin filaments or fleshy dermal appendages that mimic macroalgae, hydroids, and detritus.

Pipehorses, belonging to the Syngnathidae family, typically exhibit a largely solitary or pair-bonded existence, often camouflaged amongst seagrasses, corals, or algae, reflecting a diurnal activity pattern where they slowly forage for small invertebrates. Their reproduction is characterised by male parental care, a defining trait of the syngnathid family. Females deposit eggs into a specialised brood pouch or area on the male's body, making them oviparous with internal fertilisation and external brooding. While specific spawning seasons can vary geographically, it often aligns with warmer waters. The number of eggs or young, referred to as clutch or brood size, varies considerably between species, but males carry the developing embryos until they are miniature versions of the adults, bypassing a free-swimming larval stage.
