How and Where to Swim with Whale Sharks

• Maldives (South Ari Atoll) — South Ari is one of the few places on Earth with year-round resident whale sharks. Snorkel encounters are reliable; liveaboards add scuba time at cleaning stations.
• Mexico (Isla Mujeres / Holbox) — May through September, hundreds of whale sharks aggregate off the Yucatán to feed on tuna spawn — the largest known seasonal gathering on Earth.
• Galápagos (Darwin Arch) — June to November, pregnant females larger than 12 m pass Darwin Arch — the only place such large mature individuals are reliably encountered.
• Djibouti — Juvenile whale sharks gather in the Bay of Tadjoura November to January — small enough (4–6 m) for intimate snorkel encounters.
• Western Australia (Ningaloo) — March to August, post-coral-spawning plankton blooms draw 300+ whale sharks to Ningaloo Reef.

Booking 6–9 months ahead is essential for peak season — top liveaboards on these routes sell out a year in advance.

• Each whale shark's spot pattern is unique — researchers identify individuals using algorithms originally built to map stars.
• They can live 130 years and don't reach sexual maturity until age 30.
• A single whale shark filters about 6,000 litres of water per hour.
• They migrate thousands of kilometres a year, but exactly where they breed remains a mystery.

On scuba, stay deep and to the side — never above. They will often circle curious divers at cleaning stations. Free divers should descend below the animal's track and let it pass.
