The stripey (Microcanthus strigatus), often affectionately termed the 'footballer' in Australia, is an instantly recognisable coastal fish belonging to the sea chub family (Kyphosidae) or formerly Microcanthidae. Exhibiting a distinctly compressed, deep, and disc-like body, the stripey is famous for its bold, graphic coloration. The flanks are marked by a series of five to six oblique, dark brown to jet-black longitudinal stripes that run diagonally across a brilliant silvery-white to vivid yellow background. The dorsal fin is continuous, equipped with robust, sharp anterior spines followed by softer rays, while the caudal fin is slightly emarginate. The head features a steep dorsal profile and a small, terminal mouth equipped with fine, brush-like teeth suited for grazing. Reaching modest lengths of approximately 16 to 20 centimetres, these radiant fish create an unmistakable silhouette as they flutter through inshore waters.
